Hanjarwal – Lost from view

January 14th, 2013

Guest Post By Salman Rashid

From very ancient times, this land was traversed by roads, roads and roads. There were arterial highways like the Rajapatha that connected Bengal with the Afghan highlands. We hear of it from the chronicles of the 4th century BCE and know that this was the very road that we eventually came to know as the Grand Trunk Road. There were others that stretched between important cities. One such was the highway connecting Lahore and Multan that we today call National Highway 5 (N-5). Though this highroad had existed ever since time began, in the Middle Ages its importance grew when the peaceful years of the Mughal Empire spurred all-round growth. While Lahore in the north became a much favoured city as an alternate Mughal capital, Multan once again thrived as a rich centre of trade and commerce. It was one of the richer province of the empire during the reign of the third Mughal king, Akbar.

May 26th, 2012

While I was coming to UK for my studies, I made a list of the things that I will be doing in UK while studding here. In last 18 months, I have managed to achieve quite a lot of those tasks but due to “human negligence”, some of them are still to be done. Going to theatre and watching a Shakespeare’s play was in that list too. This past Friday I went to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre where an Olympic festival under the name of World Shakespeare Festival 2012 is going on. The project name is globe to globe where 37 of Shakespeare’s plays are being staged in 37 languages from across the globe.

TEDxAnarkali – Revitalizing the cultural heritage

October 6th, 2011

I will not define TED all over again as many has already done that. I am more concerned to the E of TED, here it represents “entertainment” and it is one regular feature of TED or TEDx events. Entertainment is not just about fun only; it can be helpful in elaborating tough subjects with ease and less time. The best example can be Junoon and Shehzad Roy trying to redefined Poetry of Iqbal in late 90s.

TEDx is coming to Lahore again; where team of TEDxLahore is busy in designing the third edition of the event and the work is underway TEDxAnarkali is coming to add music to the TEDx legacy of the city. Music is the feature of this event to celebrate the E of TEDx.
