It was getting dark for him, but it was not evening or night either. Nevertheless, the darkness was increasing with every single passing moment. He was unaware of what is going on may be there was some pain inside him. The time was over now the darkness covered everything and he was free from the pain now. The man in white lab coat standing near him shook his head and said, “I am sorry, he is no more with us”. Everyone started to cry and I only knew that my friend has died; he is no more with us to complete our cricket team, and for the computation for the results in exams. He died because of cancer, after some days I came to know about his cancer. This is not the story of my friend only every year almost 12 million falls prey of cancer, and there is a significant number of Pakistanis are there.
There is something called bone marrow that can be donated to the blood cancer patient and it can save life of a cancer patient. That was the only information that I had until this morning. Now when I am going back home from sports and social centre of Cardiff, I have enough knowledge on this subject with respect to the compatibility test and donation process. Credit of this information goes to my friend Adil.
I am associated with Cure Rayan campaign these days, Rayan is a three-year-old boy who is a cancer patient and his parents are desperately looking for the bone marrow for him. Ever since I came to know about Rayan, I have some emotional attachment to this whole scenario, because of my friend perhaps; that died because of same disease and at a very young age when he was not even in the age of double figures. He died because bone marrow that could have saved his life was not available.
Rayan and my friends are just examples and it is because of almost no awareness on this subject among us all. Most of the times, it is required that the person donating bone marrow must belong to the same ethnic group of the patient. This factor is a big issue with us, there are very less number of Pakistani registered and as compatibles for the bone marrow donation.
This drive has so far registered many people and educated many as well. I hope that Rayan get the marrow soon. The test process is as simple as it takes only 30 seconds almost. There is no pain and needle involve you just need to give saliva sample.
In Pakistan, this drive is going on in different places, social media has been the source of information, and it kept me updated. Here living more than 7000 km away from my home I also wanted to get registered for this cause and today i am on my way back home after getting registered thanks to my new friend Vinod who informed me about marrow drive in Cardiff arranged by Anthony Nolan. At the moment, I am feeling as if my friend would be happy because I might be able to save someone’s life who knows my donation of some extra cells in my body could cure Rayan or anyone else fighting with the unknown darkness. By the way, one who donated the marrow gets it back within 3 weeks. So, I am tested are you?
