Due to health, problems that I faced in my childhood I was not allowed to play, as I always wanted to so that I do not have breathing issues. Therefore, I adopted two things than and still these two are with me. One is reading and other is writing. As I had nothing to do in my leisure time, that is why I used to read a lot and this factor made me a newspaper reader at a very early stage of my life, and I became familiar with many names. The name of late Hameed Akhter is one of them. Until last year Hameed sb has been part of my daily reading list but ever since I moved to UK and got busy with my studies my reading list changed from newspapers and articles to books and journals on marketing. That is the reason I got the sad news of Hameed sb’s death after 5 days of its happening.
Yes, Hammed Akhtar the veteran journalist passed away a few days back that was the departure of a great storyteller. A journey that started in 1924 from a village near Ludhiana ended with many ups and downs. A man who knew the art of playing with the words died but there have been very less words to pay tribute to him. his own field, print media, almost remained silent whatever happened was just equal to what we call in Urdu “Khana Puri” (just for formality). I could not find blog posts, and a voice from a very few people was raised on twitter but it was ignored.
There is a question, which has been asked many times that why revolution do not come to Pakistan. Well the kind of cynicism we have shown collectively on the death of a “silent revolutionist with a voice” is not only an example but also it is the answer to that question. Hameed sb joined the list of all those who worked for the better Pakistan worked for revolution, who sent to jail and punished at the hand of dictators but kept on with their mission.
Hameed sb fought with cancer for years with a passion to live his liveliness can be imagined by the fact that he always used the word “Umer e Aziz” in his writings. That shows his love towards life and desire to live. He also wrote a condolence column on his death in his own life. Making point out of a story, sharing some old accounts and creating a nostalgic appeal was his speciality.
Today Hameed Sb is no more with us but his writings are, they are still alive and telling stories creating a hope for life. Hameed sb has always been a nostalgic writer to me and he will always have a share in my memories and nostalgia. Rest in peace Hameed Sb you will be missed at least by me.
